Why Some Precision Metal Machining Procurements Cost More Than Others?
Similar-looking precision parts can have very different prices. At Haomaer Precision, we break down the key cost factors to help you avoid “low-price traps” and make informed decisions.
🧱 Raw Material Cost
Prices vary greatly by material (e.g., tungsten steel > stainless steel, 316 SS > 304 SS). High-purity, stable materials cost more but ensure quality and reduce rework.
⚙️ Processing Difficulty
Complex shapes, tight tolerances (e.g., ±0.005mm vs. ±0.01mm), and hard-to-machine materials (e.g., tungsten steel) require special tools/processes, raising costs.
🔧 Tool Wear & Loss
Hard materials like tungsten steel require expensive diamond/carbide tools with short lifespans. Copper and aluminum cause less wear, lowering tool costs.
✅ Quality Control & Testing
Strict QC (CMM, roughness, salt spray tests) ensures reliability but adds cost. Our full-process testing guarantees every batch meets standards.
📦 Production Batch Size
Small-batch custom parts have higher unit costs due to repeated programming/setup. Large-volume orders spread fixed costs, significantly reducing per-unit prices.
How Are Precision Metal Parts Made? From Drawing to Finished Product
Many customers are curious about the production process of precision metal parts: how to turn a design drawing into a high-precision finished part? At Haomaer Precision, we have a complete set of production processes, from drawing evaluation to finished product delivery, every link is strictly controlled to ensure the quality of parts. Today, we will take you to understand the whole process of precision metal parts processing.
Drawing Evaluation & Material Selection. First, our engineering team will carefully evaluate your design drawing, check whether the structure, size, and tolerance of the part are reasonable, and put forward suggestions for optimization (DFM Design for Manufacturability) to avoid processing difficulties and quality problems caused by unreasonable design. Then, according to the performance requirements of the part, we select the appropriate raw material (copper, tungsten steel, stainless steel, etc.) and conduct incoming inspection to ensure the quality of the raw material.
Programming & Tool Preparation. For CNC machining parts, our programmers will compile processing programs according to the drawing requirements, set processing parameters (cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut), and simulate the processing process to avoid program errors. At the same time, we select appropriate tools according to the material and processing requirements (such as diamond tools for tungsten steel, high-speed steel tools for copper).
CNC Machining. Put the raw material on the CNC machine tool, call the processing program, and start automatic processing. The processing types include CNC turning, CNC milling, multi-axis machining, precision stamping, gear hobbing, etc., according to the shape and structure of the part. During the processing process, we will conduct real-time inspection to ensure that the size and shape of the part meet the requirements.
Deburring & Surface Treatment. After machining, the part will have burrs on the surface, which will affect the performance and appearance of the part. We will remove burrs through manual deburring, mechanical deburring, or chemical deburring. Then, according to the customer’s requirements, we perform surface treatment (nickel plating, zinc plating, anodizing, etc.) to improve the corrosion resistance and appearance of the part.
Quality Inspection. This is a key link to ensure the quality of parts. We use three-coordinate measuring instruments, roughness meters, calipers, micrometers, and other precision testing equipment to detect the size, tolerance, surface finish, and mechanical properties of the parts. Only the parts that pass all the tests can enter the next link.
Packaging & Delivery. The qualified parts are cleaned, dried, and packaged to avoid damage during transportation. We will choose appropriate packaging materials and transportation methods according to the size and quantity of the parts, and deliver them to you on time.
How We Ensure Quality for Every Precision Part
Quality is the life of precision metal parts, and it is also the core competitiveness of Haomaer Precision. For precision parts, even a small size error or surface defect may affect the normal operation of the entire equipment. Therefore, we have established a full-process quality control system, from incoming raw materials to finished product delivery, every link is strictly inspected to ensure that every precision part delivered to you is qualified.
1. First, Incoming Raw Material Inspection. We have a strict incoming inspection process for all raw materials (copper, tungsten steel, stainless steel, aluminum alloy, etc.). Our quality inspectors use professional testing equipment to detect the chemical composition, mechanical properties, and dimensional accuracy of raw materials, ensuring that the raw materials meet the processing requirements and national standards. Any unqualified raw materials will be rejected immediately, eliminating quality risks from the source.
2. Second, In-Process Quality Control. During the entire processing process, we implement real-time quality monitoring. For CNC machining, our operators conduct regular inspections of parts during processing, using calipers, micrometers, and other tools to detect the size and shape of parts, ensuring that they meet the tolerance requirements. For complex parts, we use three-coordinate measuring instruments for in-process sampling inspection, timely finding and correcting processing errors, and avoiding batch unqualified products.
3. Third, Strict Post-Processing Inspection. After machining, deburring, and surface treatment, all parts will undergo a comprehensive post-processing inspection. We focus on detecting the dimensional accuracy, surface finish, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of parts, and conduct 100% inspection for small-batch custom parts to ensure that every part is qualified. For large-volume mass production, we implement random inspection according to international standards, with a sampling rate of not less than 5%, ensuring the consistency of batch quality.
